The hibiscus was officially designated Hawaiʻi’s state flower in 1988, chosen in part to recognize maʻo hau hele (Hibiscus brackenridgei), a native species found only in Hawaiʻi. Long before that designation, however, hibiscus imagery was already deeply embedded in Hawaiʻi’s visual culture, with its bold, vivid forms appearing widely across textiles and home goods by the mid-20th century.
Hibiscus Pop builds on that visual legacy, featuring the hibiscus motif from our Chunky Hibiscus art print, originally hand-drawn in the ’90s. Enlarged and given room to bloom, the hibiscus takes on a new rhythm — oversized, graphic, and steeped in the aloha aesthetic of our Hawaiʻi childhood.
